It took HDA 25 years to serve our first 1,000 families.

Now, you can help serve the next 1,000 families in just 10 years!

From fighting generational poverty, to an ongoing housing crisis, to a 1,000-year flood in 2022 that destroyed hundreds of homes, the need for affordable housing in Appalachian East Kentucky has never been more significant. With the need so great, we need your help to repair and preserve existing homes and to build new homes low-income East Kentuckians can afford.

"My home isn’t livable after the flood. Me and my children have been living with family since September 2022. I’ve been working with FEMA since the flood, but I feel the assistance will not be enough to fix my home for my family. The only way I could ever get a decent home for my family is through a program like this one. I’m on social security benefits so that makes it hard for me to even get a low-interest loan. I would appreciate all the help I can receive from this program."

Following the devastating floods of July 2022, the housing need in Appalachian East Kentucky is monumental. We are currently working with over 250 flood survivors and low-income families who are in need of a new home and over 150 very low and low-income homeowners, including those whose homes were impacted by the floods, in need of home rehabs & repairs.

Before the flood, over 28,000 people were in need of new and better homes in the four counties we serve in Eastern Kentucky. Those counties – Breathitt, Knott, Leslie, and Perry – are four of the poorest counties in the entire country. Now, with nearly 11,500 people directly affected by the historic flooding, the number of people needing an affordable home is far greater.

Your support is critical as we work to meet our community’s extraordinary needs. Without your help, struggling families in East Kentucky may wait years to have a home they can afford.

Why We Need You

Everyone should have a home they can afford. And after a disaster, like the one we experienced in July 2022, no one should have to wait years for the home they had to be replaced simply because they can’t afford it.

Housing costs are a family’s greatest expense. For the people of Appalachian East Kentucky, where poverty rates are some of the highest in the nation, housing costs consume nearly half of a family’s income. This reality makes it very difficult for low-income individuals and families to build wealth. These high costs also limit the funds they have for other life essentials, like healthcare, nutritious food, and transportation.

When you give to the Housing Development Alliance (HDA), you become a key part of everything we do. Your donation goes to work immediately! We don’t stick it in a fund and wait to use it – it’s needed now, and we’ll show you exactly how we use your money.

With your help, more East Kentucky families will own homes that will help them build financial stability and a better, more promising future. More homeowners will have safer, better, and healthier homes that can stand the test of time, because you helped them get the repairs their home needed.

Families with good homes are stronger. Homeowners with improved homes are stronger. A community is only as strong as its people. Affordable housing can move people out of poverty, and when people are more secure financially, they contribute more to their community and to the local economy – and that helps everyone.

That’s the power of housing. That’s what we believe in so strongly. We believe affordable homes can transform lives and build a brighter future for all of Appalachian East Kentucky!

To date, our donors have helped over 2,900 people have quality affordable homes, which has invested over $85 million back into our local economy. Imagine that power at work in the lives of 1,000 more East Kentucky families. Please don’t wait to support affordable housing in East Kentucky – donate today!

Low-income East Kentucky families & flood survivors need homes they can afford. Will you help them?
